1988 Ford Bronco II with 2 fuel pumps....no power to either.
Friend recently bought it and it's been sitting for about 4 years. People said the fuel pump stopped working, they replaced it and it still didn't do anything. We put a new gas tank and a new pump in the tank. Still nothing. Took the high pressure pump off the truck, ran straight 12v to it and it pumps and does in fact look new as the people stated. Ran straight 12v to the in tank pump and it pumps as well. Ran straight 12v to both pumps on the truck and it fired right up and runs. Both pumps use the same fuse and it's good (getting power there). Both appear to use the same relay, it clicks when you turn the key on so appears to be functioning also. Tried a new relay, made no difference. There's also an inertia switch that disables the fuel pumps incase of an accident. Reset it, still nothing (power is going through the switch). Unhooked it and jumped the wires to bypass it and still nothing. Only thing I haven't done which I should have is do a continuity test of the signal wire for both pumps to see if there's a break in it between the relay and the pumps (the pumps use the same color coded wire for power). I'll do that next, but I've got another question too. I know in cars with single fuel pumps the pump is always running while the car is running. But, is this the same with the 2 fuel pump system or does the one in the tank just act as a primer for the first couple of seconds and then kick off? That would make sense to me, but the fact that both pumps use the same wire for power pretty much says that both pumps are always going to be on while the vehicle is running. Lastly, when you turn the key on the pumps should prime for 2-3 seconds and kick off. Does the computer tell the pumps to kick off since it is not receiving any information that the motor is turning over? Could it just be a bad connection at the computer? Jason

look at the fuses!

This is just suggestions: Possible green corrosion at ecu connection not getting good ground at tank(possible ground strap attach to tank??) corrosion internally in wire causing high resistance, or break in connection good idea about checking resistance in wire(s) to narrow down the prob hope this help(I have alot of these problems at work)

besides the fuse, the broncs also had "fused links" in the wire. These were weak links in the wire that was designed to melt before the rest of the wire would. I remember my uncle had a bronc fuel pump quit working and he replaced the fused link section of wire that was just in front of the driver side rear tire as best I can remember. I think the wire said on it "fused link" or something like that.

Didn't notice a fuse link at the back of the truck but there's about 4 under the hood close to the relays. All of them are fine. I think what I'm going to do is just wire it up so they're always on when the key is on, put a fuse inline and call it a day. Jason
