HELP!!! ASAP!!! READ THIS!!! Just pulled the valve cover off the 240. The front of the exhaust cam snapped off, leaving the sprocket and chain laying in the front cover.
I have a good spare head (on the spare engine). Could I replace the head and timing set and have a running engine again? I'm not sure how much damage its done to the pistons, but I'd venture that all 16 valves are BENT
I'd like to get a few opinions before I go any farther. I'm not in a hurry. I'm lazy as shit to be honest with you. I don't want to turn the first bolt or not thats not neccessary
Head swap pwns motor swap (in an unheated, cramped garage)

Wow.
I'd say swap the motor. Least you know yours runs and has no problems. Rebuilding that could be a bigger pain in the ass then it needs to be. I had the same problem with my Venge just a while back and I wished I had changed the motor instead of replacing a piston, headgasket, timing everything...ect.
But, it's all in prefrence. You can swap a motor in those in the better part of the day. Rebuilding whatever is broken, and from the look of it your just seeing the top of the mountain there, can get time consuming and costly. But...like I said..prefrence.

Did you read my PM on this?
Yeah, the whole thing may be junk, but from what you have told me, there may be a SLIGHT chance that it is not. Tear the head off an check.
TORQUERULES- 02-23-2006
Is it an interference motor or non-interference? Look in the PM.
WarriorBlaZe- 02-23-2006
I guess I'm off to tear the heads loose. I'll get some more pics and keep you guys posted.
mrphotoman- 02-23-2006
yeah if it is non-interference it may be okay. My car is an interference motor so I have to get my timing belt changed at 60k so I do not have to worry about it breaking and fkn up the motor.
WarriorBlaZe- 02-23-2006
Well guys...
I came inside to grab a bite to eat and thought I'd update everyboby. I took the intake and exhaust manifolds off, cams, drained the coolant etc.
I HATE NISSAN. There are Emissions controls all over that car that I had to un hook to get parts to move an inch one way or the other.
Got the head out of the way finally. 1-2-3 cylinders look ok, nothing I'd brag about though. Cylinder 4 has HUGE gouges in the piston. Cams are out, valve are supposed to be shut, but I can see straight thru them
Guess I'll pull the engine tomorrow or Saturday. YAY!
jivepepper- 02-23-2006
What kind of goals do you have for the car?
WarriorBlaZe- 02-23-2006
Going to drive it for now. I'm thinking about building up the block I'm getting ready to pull and maybe boosting it later on down the road. 350-400 rwhp in a 2900lb convertible

Hey, I think you broke something in those pics..... Good luck with everything, and I hope you have more work ethic with this than I did with my late-truck, haha.

SwiperDaFox- 03-11-2006
So what ever became of this Elswick? Did you fix the old motor or just swap with your perfectly good running one?
WarriorBlaZe- 03-11-2006
I dropped the spare motor in it. Its been up and running for a while now.
