throttle body problem I just got done installing a throttle body for my Focus ('00 non-SVT, MTX 5 speed), and the idle is fine, but when I just barely touch the gas pedal, the revs shoot up as if in WOT. What could be wrong here, and how can I fix it?

Is the throttle cable installed correctly or is there a spring missing on the throttle wheel?
brummy- 01-02-2007
It appears to be installed correctly, and all the springs are there. When I pull on the little lever thing to open the butterfly, it feels pretty loose, unlike before with the stock unit on.

Something is off. Does the throttle shaft have a spring on it (located between the plate the cable hooks to and the body )?
brummy- 01-02-2007
Yup, and a nut securing/keeping tension on the spring. Do you think I should try to tighten the spring by tightening the nut or loosen it or what?

Did you disconnect the battery and reset the cpu? Is everything good with the tps?

I didn't disconnect the battery when I installed it because I kind of forgot, but I went back and disconnected it for five or so minutes, then reconnected it. According to this picture the TPS is mounted correctly, and I even rotated it 180 degrees because I heard that worked for some people, but it didn't for me.

Holy shit! lol, look at all those mounting positions for the tps. I would try mounting it without rotating it 180* in the stock postion.

I did that twice, once before rotating it 180 degrees and that's where it is now, hahaha.

Do you have a way you can measure TPS voltage? Either use a datalogger program (SCT livelink)?
That would tell me what the computer is seeing... try moving the throttle blade by hand and see what the motor does. It shouldnt go FULL throttle with only a 1/10" of the blade open.

Yes that is what I am talking about.
Measure the TPS voltage. Make sure it does not go above 4v (close to 5v even) unless it is at full throttle. Also, did you port the intake to match the new t-body? The throttle blade could be sticking when it opens.
BTW, get a 2000 fOCUS intake and port it. It is a MUCH better intake for the fOCUS Zetec (besides the FRPP piece) than any other fOCUS model year with the Zetec.

BTW, when testing the TPS, it is better if you can find an analog voltmeter. That way you can watch the dial for any zerking, etc. If you see that you have a problem. Usually a bad TPS.
The voltage should move through a smooth arc.
Also, voltage with key on engine off should not be over 1 volt. .998 or close should be your target. At least over .990, but no more than 1 volt.

I'll try that tomorrow, thanks.
I didn't port my intake, which is a 2000 model. I should have, but I have no clue how to go about doing so.

Well, it should at least be ported for the throttle body. It is plastic, so a Dremel with a Wal-Mart bit will work. You can do it on the car. Just place the new gasket on the intake, scribe it, then stuff some rags in the intake. Port the intake opening. Try to taper it about 1" down in at least. When finished, vacuum the sheds a little, then pull out the rags, and then vacuum again (get down inside it real good).

BTW, didn't read your sig. You have a 2000 model. Good. A little port matching would be good, but for now you are alright. Just port the t-body opening.
